Single Vane (Butterfly) Dampers are best suited for open/closed duty as the sealing periphery is minimal relative to duct area. However, where cost is of prime consideration, single vane units offer reasonable modulating control but create more disruption to flow than multivane dampers.
A typical application for manual dampers is regulating or ‘trimming’ where the vane remains in a fixed position for long periods in order to maintain a constant flow control through the system.
Multivane (Louvre) Dampers are available with various configurations with respect to vane rotation, frame splitters (incorporating central bearings), linked or independently actuated vanes and single or double drive systems.
Vane rotation is either direct (parallel) or opposed. The latter is ideal for flow control as disruption is minimal whereas direct rotation is better suited for open/closed duty or positioning where the vanes could be used to improve flow around duct bends.
The greater the number of vanes the better the control but pressure loss across the damper increases and sealing efficiency is reduced due to seal periphery.
Diverter (Bypass) Dampers are available in many configurations to suit various applications. The bypass type would normally be fitted with two independent vanes either incorporated in a single body fabrication or two independent flanged dampers bolted to a duct section. Both vanes are connected by linkage to a common actuator.
The diverter design incorporates a single vane which moves between both legs of the duct intersection in order to control flow into each duct.
Slide Plate (Guillotines) are generally used to give reasonable isolation and incorporate flexible sealing systems.
Guillotine dampers are of larger and heavier construction with various actuation systems.
Example locations — electrostatic precipitators, filter plant and boiler isolation.
Blanking Plates are a slide plate design which is bolted into the duct for 100% personnel safe isolation.
